How do the emails inside a campaign work?

Sound familiar?

Someone signs up through your campaign's lead page — then what? Do they just sit in your contact list? Each campaign has its own small email machine: an automatic reply that delivers what they asked for, and rules that decide where they go next. Set it once per campaign and every sign-up gets a proper welcome without you touching anything 📬.

What's happening

Open your campaign in Content and click through its steps — the Email step is where the machinery lives:

Why it works this way

The moment someone signs up is the moment they care most — an instant, useful reply converts that interest into a relationship, and a routing rule means the relationship continues without depending on you remembering. Campaigns keep their own autoresponder (rather than one global reply) so each audience gets a welcome that matches what they actually asked for 🙂.

What to do now

  1. Open the campaign in Content and go to its Email step.
  2. Edit the autoresponder — keep the structure and the merge fields exactly as written (spelling and capitals included, or they won't fill), personalise the rest. Check the subject line reads like you.
  3. Set Next Workflow to your nurture workflow so the relationship continues after the welcome.
  4. Add a post-capture rule at the top of the page if you want sign-ups routed somewhere specific — press Add Rule and choose the destination.
  5. Test it end to end: sign up through your own lead page with your own email address, and check what arrives and where you land.

The question behind the question

"How is this different from an email workflow?" The campaign email is the handshake — one automatic reply tied to one sign-up moment. Workflows are the ongoing conversation — sequences that send over weeks on a schedule. The autoresponder delivers the pack; the Next Workflow / post-capture rule hands the person into the conversation. You want both, doing their own jobs 🤝.
